New York, NY (Spring\Summer 2000) -..."Tony Nigel's most impressive works are his portraits of heroic, often mythic African tribesmen and Native American warriors, rendered in a highly detailed and meticulous magic realist technique.

In one of Nigel's most powerful paintings, the regal profile of an American Indian is juxtaposed with the frontal image of an African tribesman, the planes of their cheekbones and other features of their noble countenances merging harmoniously, mysteriously in a starry nocturnal sky.

Another of Nigel's paintings focuses on the muscular shoulders and ornate costume of a spear-bearing African warrior in full regalia, while yet another strong painting, "Red Bear," presents the craggy features of a Native American brave looming in monolithically in monumental profile.  Both paintings are beautifully realized tributes to the innate strength and dignity of indigenous peoples standing fast against forces that would render their culture extinct.

Indeed, it is this sense of heroism and idealism that makes many of Tony Nigel's paintings so moving and memorable."
