I paint because I must. For me, painting is a necessity, a struggle, a remedy and a joy.
My work emerges from various sources - some from dreams, some from waking visions, but most from the act of engaging my materials with openness and spontaneity. I feel my way as I go, stumbling into the unknown as I strive to make manifest in paint an equivalent of inner consciousness. Searching for original, living forms, I vacillate between rational and intuitive states as I work. In this process, I understand my role as an artist-vessel who simultaneously gives and receives in the creation of each work.
The creative voice that speaks through my work is one and the same voice that spoke, indeed speaks, through my ancestors’ visions, dreams and art. In particular, I acknowledge a spiritual and artistic heritage through my grandmother, Dureen Goodbear Keller, and our ancestors of the Bear Clan, Ho-Chunk Nation.
