My artworks frequently involve both installation and video works. The artworks themselves revolve around my experiences as a child growing up. The common themes and methods of expression are as follows:
The inner conflict as the subject, the inner organs as sites of conflict, diverse media as the form, interactivity as the method of communication.
First, my artworks are focused on inner conflict that I have felt since was
a child. These inner conflicts are from psychological and social experience, such as loneliness, fear, and conflict from relationship and attachment. Basically, I would like to express the inner problems that I have experienced and suffered from.
Second, to express the inner conflict, I use human organs, such as the lungs, stomach, and heart. By highlighting the inner organs of the human body, the essential nature of the psychological conflict of the mind could be brought out naturally. In addition, the organs, especially the stomach and lungs, continuously expand and contract, symbolizing the vital functions of both the human body and the continuous inner conflict as well as ways of healing.
Third, I use diverse forms and media. All different kinds of media such
video, sound, music, fabric, machine, painting, drawing and so on are adapted for expression. In my point of view, materials are just materials, so that different kinds can be used, depending on how well they fit the idea and purpose.
Fourth, my artworks are interactive. They are expanded to share the experience with the audience. Enlarged dimensions invite the audience to go inside of the artworks. By attracting audiences into the models of lungs, stomach, etc. I want to express that inner conflicts are not individual matters, but common among human beings. It is through interactivity in the discussion of my work, that healing is involved. |
