I “paint” with wool using embroidery to create images (usually edge-to-edge) on fabric, in effect…tapestries. Non-objective works, allow me to experiment with color, shape and texture in an uninhibited way. However, what attracts the most interest are my portraits. Striving for ever greater realism, I use African American models, to explore universal themes of relationship and self-concern. In each of these, color enhances mood, the palette varying with each piece.
No matter the subject, I aim for beauty because it uplifts me as well as the viewer. Although trained in drawing and painting, I initially chose to work with embroidery as a medium because yarn is clean and dry. It is also discrete in that working with it requires the placing of separate elements (stitches) which only later complete a puzzle. There are few happy accidents. But I like that too because is a each piece is a new challenge: How far ahead can I anticipate the process? Can I actually make what I see in my mind’s eye?
