My work explores the theme of human brokenness, which encompasses anxiety, loss, fragmentation and the pain of feeling insufficient and inadequate. I am also interested in how these feelings surface in our interactions with each other.
In my recent works, I have chosen a limited palette of desaturated colors in order to invoke the interior, emotional world, where these feelings often remain hidden. The figures in the paintings are usually life-sized, offering themselves as a both a mirror, and as another presence in relationship to the viewer. The gestural brushstrokes reveal the physical, bodily action of emotional response, and bring a sense of immediacy to the paintings. The figures and the space around them are often visually merged, reflecting how the boundaries between the self and its emotional field are difficult to distinguish. By placing the figures in a space that seems to extend from the actual room in which the painting hangs, I am hoping to extend the emotional field into the viewer’s space.
