Artist Statement I paint abstract landscapes. Although some of the paintings seem to have only a
minimal reference to a place, I do often have a place in mind. My paintings are not
direct landscapes but reflect my emotional response to the relationship between people
and the natural world.
Visual influences include many visits to the North Fork of Long Island, but visits to the
western United States, with it's horizontal landscapes and unique geography are also evident.
Aerial views, seen from airplane windows, also influence some of the shapes in my work.
The flattened landscapes marked by the contours of rivers, the rectangular fields and round
crop circles, and the flattened greens and earth colors occur in many paintings.
I am a traditional painter in my materials and methods. I paint in oils on stretched canvases.
I start paintings with charcoal lines and color washes and often incorporate the charcoal
underdrawings in the finished work. I feel that balance and color are the most important
elements in my paintings. ©robin rule | | Harbor oil 2008 |
